Omega-3 fatty acids help the blood-brain barrier

Omega-3 and brain

New research shows that omega-3 fatty acids protect the brain.

We can’t say enough good things about omega-3 fatty acids. We tell our patients it is one of the few things we recommend people take forever! Recently more research touting the wonders of omeag-3 fatty acids was published in the journal Neuron. Harvard researchers found that proper omega-3 levels protect the blood-brain barrier and help keep bad things from getting through.

“Already extolled for their health benefits as a food compound, omega-3 fatty acids now appear to also play a critical role in preserving the integrity of the blood-brain barrier, which protects the central nervous system from blood-borne bacteria, toxins, and other pathogens, according to new research from Harvard Medical School.”

The impact that omega-3’s have on heart and arterial health is well known. This new data will have a lot impact in the areas of auto-immune diseases like MS (something we also like omega-3 for) and neuro-developmental issues like autism.
